Bishop Cabantan as head of Bukidnon Watershed and River Basin Forum

Because of the tragedy happened last December 2011 by Typhoon Sendong at Cagayan de Oro City and Valencia City, Hon. Alex P.   Calingasan, current provincial governor of Bukidnon entrusted Bishop Jose Cabantan as head of the Watershed and River Basin Forum (BWRBF) created through an Executive Order last January 2012.

According to MindaNews, Governor Calingasan has chosen Bishop Cabantan because he is the best person to head the Forum for  his influences and the initiatives done for watershed and environmental  protection.

As we remember before he was named as head of  BWRBF, Bishop Cabantan cited “climate sins” as the root cause of the flash-floods  last December 2011. The bishop mentioned the undiminished gold flash mining in Tumpagon, Cagayan de Oro, upstream of the Iponan River, which he points out continues to contribute to soil erosion and siltation downstream. Then, in his new year homily’s he uttered, “Mining, whether small or large scale, is a threat to the  environment.
